Two roofers look at the same house and hand you estimates that are thousands of dollars apart. When you dig into the gap, it’s usually the shingle. The higher number is architectural shingle roofing, the lower one is a flat 3-tab, and nobody really explained why you’d pay for the difference.

You want a roof that holds up to the weather where you live without paying for features you won’t use. That’s a fair thing to want, and you can get a straight answer before you choose.
APC Roofing is GAF Certified, licensed and insured, and we’ve been installing shingle roofs since 2017 in Central Florida, the Daytona Beach area, Kansas City and Springfield, Missouri. Your inspection and estimate are free. Call 866-995-0704 to get one on the calendar.
What makes a shingle “architectural”
An architectural shingle, also called a laminated or dimensional shingle, is two layers bonded together. A full base layer sits underneath, and a second layer with cut-out sections is glued on top.
That second layer changes how the shingle behaves. It’s thicker and heavier, with more asphalt and more reinforcement in every square foot. It casts shadows across the roof, so from the street you see depth that looks closer to wood shake than to a flat grid. And it gets rid of the long straight slots that 3-tab shingles have, which leaves wind less of an edge to grab.
A 3-tab shingle is a single flat layer cut into three tabs. It costs less up front. Across the industry, architectural shingles have become the most common choice for a full replacement.
How architectural shingles handle wind
The wind rating on a bundle of shingles assumes the roof was nailed exactly the way the manufacturer says. On many architectural shingles, the top wind warranty calls for six nails per shingle instead of four, plus a sealed starter strip along the eaves and rakes.
Where the nails go matters as much as how many. Every shingle has a narrow nailing strip printed across it. A nail driven above that strip only catches one layer when it should catch two. A premium shingle nailed high can perform like a bargain one.
That’s the part you can’t see once the roof is done, so ask about it before. Which nailing pattern does the estimate assume? Is a starter strip included? A good contractor will answer without hesitating.
Hail, impact ratings and Class 4
“Impact resistant” doesn’t mean much on its own. The real measure is a lab test called UL 2218, which drops steel balls on the shingle and grades it Class 1 through Class 4. Class 4 is the top grade. It has to survive a two-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet onto the same spot twice without cracking.
Whether Class 4 is worth paying for depends on where your house is.
In Kansas City and Springfield, spring and summer storms bring hail often enough that an impact-rated architectural shingle is worth a serious look. Some insurance companies offer a discount on your premium for a Class 4 roof. Call your insurer and ask before you pick a shingle, not after.
In Central Florida and the Daytona Beach area, wind and rain from summer storms and hurricane season do most of the damage. Hail does happen with strong inland thunderstorms, but the wind rating and the nailing usually matter more here.
Architectural shingle roof replacement: what happens under the shingles
The shingle gets the attention, but the deck underneath decides how well it lasts. Once the old roof is off, the crew should check the wood across the whole roof for soft spots, separating plywood and old water stains. Nothing holds a nail in rotten wood.
That’s one of the best reasons to tear off rather than lay new shingles over old ones. A full replacement is the only time anyone sees your roof structure for a long while. Our shingle roof installation page walks through each layer from the deck up.
Choosing a color you’ll still like
Architectural shingles show off their depth best on a steep, visible front roof. On a low-slope roof you can barely see from the street, the shadow lines matter less, so put more weight on color and price.
Darker blends hide small color differences and run hotter in the sun. Lighter blends stay cooler, which helps in Florida summers. Look at samples outside in daylight, held up against your house. A color picked at the kitchen table almost never looks the same on the roof.

Architectural shingle roofing questions
Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost?
For most full replacements, yes. You get a thicker shingle, better wind resistance when it’s nailed right, and a roof that looks better from the street. If you’re selling soon and only need a basic roof, 3-tab can still make sense. We’ll talk it through with you.
Do architectural shingles hold up to hail?
Better than 3-tab, because there’s more material to absorb a hit. If you live where hail is common, ask about an impact-rated version. Large hail can still damage any shingle.
Can architectural shingles go over my old roof?
Sometimes it’s allowed, but it’s usually a poor trade. Laying over skips the deck inspection, adds weight, and hides problems you’d want to find now. Local code also limits how many layers a roof can have.
What’s the difference between architectural and dimensional shingles?
None. Architectural, dimensional and laminated all describe the same two-layer shingle.
A roof that fits your house and your weather
If your roof is already losing shingles or leaking, waiting through another storm season usually means more damage to fix. Getting the right answers now lets you choose on your own schedule.
