How a standing seam roof works
A standing seam roof is made of long metal panels with raised edges. Where two panels meet, the edges lock together into a seam that stands up an inch or more above the flat part of the panel. That raised seam is where the name comes from.
The panels are held down by clips hidden under those seams. No screws go through the face of the metal, so there are no exposed fasteners or rubber washers to wear out. That’s the main difference from corrugated metal roofing, which is screwed down through the surface.
Panels are usually formed to the full length of each slope, from eave to ridge. With no crosswise joints, water has nowhere to slip in as it runs down the roof.
Why standing seam suits Kansas City weather
Our weather swings hard, from below freezing to triple digits, and metal grows and shrinks with every swing. Standing seam clips let each panel move a little as it expands and contracts, so the metal doesn’t pull against fixed screws. That’s a big reason these roofs hold up over time.
Freeze-thaw is less of an issue too. On a shingle roof, water gets into small gaps and freezes. On a standing seam roof, the seams sit above the water line, and there are no screw holes for water to work into.
Snow slides off metal easily. That’s good for the roof, but a whole slope letting go at once can land on a walkway or tear at a gutter. Snow guards clamp onto the seams without piercing the panels, and they’re worth placing above doors, decks and walkways.
Wind pulls hardest at the edges and corners. A properly installed roof uses closer clip spacing in those zones and trim that’s locked in place, so there’s no loose edge for a gust to catch.

Hail can dent a standing seam roof. How badly depends on the size of the hail, the thickness of the metal and the panel profile. Many dents are cosmetic: the roof still sheds water and the finish is intact. A hit that cracks the paint or bends a seam is a different matter and should be looked at.
Thicker panels resist dents better, and some panels are tested and rated for impact. If you live where hail comes through regularly, that’s worth weighing. It’s also worth asking your insurance agent how your policy treats cosmetic dents on a metal roof, since policies differ.

Choices you’ll make
Seam type. Snap-lock panels click together along the seam and work well on most residential slopes. Mechanically seamed panels are folded together with a tool after installation, which makes a tighter seam that’s better for lower slopes and higher wind.
Panel width and rib height. Narrower panels and taller ribs look different and help reduce waviness. This is mostly a style choice, with some practical trade-offs.
Thickness. Homes commonly use 24- or 26-gauge steel. Thicker metal costs more and resists dents better.
Finish and color. Most residential panels have a baked-on paint finish. Higher-grade finishes hold their color longer. Lighter colors reflect more sun and keep the attic cooler in summer.
About oil canning
Oil canning is a slight waviness you can sometimes see in the flat part of a metal panel, especially in low morning or evening light. It doesn’t affect how well the roof keeps water out. It’s a look, not a leak.
It can be reduced with stiffening lines rolled into the panel, narrower panels, heavier metal and a flat, even deck underneath. If it would bother you, say so up front and we’ll factor it into the panel choice.
Can standing seam go over shingles?
No. We tear the old roof off down to the deck before any standing seam goes on, so we can see and fix any soft or wet wood first.
