A sloped roof sheds a summer downpour in seconds. A flat roof can stay wet for hours, and that’s the root of most flat roof problems. Shingles and tile aren’t made for roofs this flat, so these sections are covered with a membrane, one continuous sheet that keeps water out as long as every seam and edge stays sealed.

Seams

Penetrations and equipment
Every pipe, bracket and AC stand that passes through the roof needs its own seal. Air-conditioning service trips across the roof scuff the membrane over time, and a dropped tool can puncture it.
