Maybe you’ve had your shingles replaced after hail once already, and you’d rather not do it again. Maybe you just like the look of a metal roof on the house down the street. Either way, you’re looking into metal roof installation in Kansas City, and you’ve got questions nobody’s answered straight: Will it be loud? Will hail dent it? Is it worth the extra cost?

Roofers fastening new metal roofing panels

Those are good questions, and the answers depend on which kind of metal roof you choose and how it’s installed. You should have them before you commit.

APC Roofing is GAF Certified, licensed and insured, and we’ve been in business since 2017. We install standing seam, corrugated and exposed-fastener panels, metal shingles and stone-coated steel. Your inspection and estimate are free. Call 913-398-5020 and we’ll talk through what fits your house.

Metal roof installation in Kansas City: your options

Standing seam

Standing seam panels run from the eave to the ridge with raised seams between them. The fasteners are hidden under the seams, so nothing pierces the face of the panel. It’s the cleanest look and usually the top of the price range. Our standing seam metal roofing in Kansas City page covers it in detail.

Exposed-fastener and corrugated panels

These panels are screwed straight through the face into the roof structure, with a rubber washer under each screw head. They cost less and go up faster, and they’re common on barns, shops and some homes. The trade-off is upkeep: the washers age in the sun, and screws may need to be checked and replaced over the years. Metal shingles and stone-coated steel

If you want metal’s toughness but a more traditional look, metal shingles are stamped to look like shingles, slate or shake. Stone-coated steel has a granule finish bonded to it, so it looks a lot like an asphalt or tile roof from the street, and the textured surface hides small dents well.

Steel or aluminum?

Most residential metal roofs in the Kansas City area are steel, coated with zinc or a zinc-aluminum mix to resist rust, then painted. Aluminum doesn’t rust, which matters more near salt water than in the Midwest, and it dents more easily. Thickness is listed by gauge, and a lower number means thicker metal. Thicker panels cost more and resist hail dents better. Our steel roofing in Kansas City page goes further into it.

Metal roofs and Kansas City hail

This is the big question here. Metal won’t crack or lose granules the way asphalt shingles do, but hail can dent it. Most dents are cosmetic: the panel still keeps water out. Large hail can dent thinner panels badly or damage seams and trim, and that’s functional damage.

Some metal products carry an impact rating, the same Class 4 rating used for impact-resistant shingles. Thicker gauge and textured or stone-coated finishes show dents less. Before you choose, it’s worth reading your homeowner’s policy too, since some policies treat cosmetic dents on metal roofs differently from leaks.

What a good metal roof installation includes

Metal is less forgiving of shortcuts than shingles. A solid installation should cover:

  • A clean, sound deck, or solid purlins where the design calls for them
  • Underlayment rated for metal roofing, since metal gets hot in the summer sun
  • Trim and flashing made for the panel profile at eaves, rakes, valleys, walls and the ridge
  • Fasteners and clips placed to the manufacturer’s pattern, with extra holding power at edges and corners where wind pulls hardest
  • Room for the panels to expand and contract, which matters in a climate that can swing from below zero to the upper 90s

Snow sliding off a metal roof all at once can land on a walkway or a gutter. Snow guards over doors and walkways are worth discussing for a Kansas City winter.

Can metal go over my shingles?

No. We tear the old roof off down to the deck before any metal goes on, so we can see and fix the wood first. A tear-off also lets us fix leaks and soft spots in the deck before the new roof goes on.

How it works with APC Roofing

  1. Book your free inspection. Call 913-398-5020 or request an estimate online.
  2. Get a clear, honest assessment and estimate. You’ll see photos of your current roof and get a written estimate comparing the metal options that fit your house. Financing is available through Aqua Finance, Fortifi, Hearth and Home Run Finance.
  3. Your new roof goes on and the site gets cleaned up.

If your current roof is near the end of its life, waiting through another storm season can turn a planned replacement into an emergency one, with interior damage on top.

Metal roof questions from Kansas City homeowners

Is a metal roof loud in the rain?

Over a solid deck with underlayment and an insulated attic, most people don’t notice much difference from shingles. Metal over open framing, like a pole barn, is louder.

Will hail dent a metal roof?

It can. Most dents are cosmetic and don’t cause leaks. Thicker panels and textured finishes hold up and hide dents better.

Do you install metal roofs in Overland Park and Johnson County?

Yes. We work across the Kansas City metro on both sides of the state line, including Overland Park, Shawnee, Lee’s Summit, Independence and Blue Springs.

Is metal worth it over architectural shingles?

For many homeowners who plan to stay put, yes, because metal handles weather well and needs less frequent replacement. It costs more up front, so it comes down to how long you’ll own the house and how you feel about the look.
