Look down almost any street in Overland Park and you’ll see asphalt shingles on most of the roofs. Yours is probably one of them. And if it’s starting to curl at the edges, shed granules into the gutters or leak after a hard storm, you’re likely wondering what kind of shingle roofing work it actually needs.

New dark gray architectural shingle roof

It’s hard to tell from the ground. A roof that looks tired might only need a few repairs, and a roof that looks fine might be hiding hail damage. You don’t want to spend on a new roof too early, and you don’t want to patch one that’s past saving. You deserve a roofer who shows you what’s there and lets you decide.

APC Roofing is GAF Certified, licensed and insured, and we’ve been in business since 2017. Your inspection and estimate are free. Call 913-398-5020.

Shingle roofing in Overland Park: what we do

Shingle work falls into three kinds of jobs, and the right one depends on what your roof needs.

Repairs. Replacing wind-damaged or missing shingles, swapping out cracked pipe boots, redoing flashing at walls and chimneys, and fixing leaks at valleys. See shingle roof repair in Overland Park.

Replacements. Tearing off a worn or storm-damaged roof down to the wood and putting a new shingle roof on, with new underlayment, ice protection and flashing. Our shingle roof installation page walks through each step.

Upgrades. Going from an older 3-tab roof to architectural shingles, or to an impact-rated shingle that stands up better to hail.

The types of shingles you’ll choose from

Most homeowners in the area pick from a short list.

  • 3-tab shingles are thin and flat, with a uniform pattern. You’ll still find them on older homes, garages and sheds.
  • Architectural shingles are thicker, layered shingles with a dimensional look. They’re the most common choice for a new roof today.
  • Premium or designer shingles are heavier still, made to look like slate or wood shake.
  • Impact-rated shingles are built to resist hail better than standard shingles. Some insurance companies treat them differently, so it’s worth asking your agent.

If you’re still deciding, our page on asphalt shingle roofing in Overland Park compares them side by side.

What Kansas weather does to a shingle roof

Shingles in the Kansas City area deal with four kinds of weather, and each one wears them differently.

Hail is the biggest threat. A hit can bruise a shingle, crack its mat underneath, or knock off the granules that protect the asphalt from the sun. The damage often doesn’t leak right away. It shows up a few years later as a roof that’s aging too fast.

Wind works on the edges. Each shingle has a strip of sealant that bonds it to the one below. A strong gust can break that seal and lift the shingle, and once it’s lifted, it can crease or tear off in the next storm.

Ice and snow cause trouble at the eaves. When snow melts higher on the roof and refreezes at the colder edge, it forms an ice dam, and water backs up under the shingles. Ice and water protection along the eaves is what stops that water from getting into the house.

Summer heat slowly dries out shingles and the sealants around pipes and flashing. South- and west-facing slopes usually age first.

On shady, north-facing slopes, you may also see dark streaks or moss. The streaks are usually algae. Moss holds moisture against the shingles and is worth clearing gently. Don’t pressure wash, since it strips granules.

Repair or replace your shingle roof?

A repair makes sense when the damage is limited to a few spots and the rest of the shingles still lie flat, hold their granules and bend without cracking. Replacement makes more sense when curling, cracking or granule loss covers most of the roof, when hail damaged large areas, or when you keep chasing new leaks.

Putting new shingles over old ones is sometimes possible, but it hides the roof deck, adds weight and can shorten the new roof’s life. In most cases, a full tear-off is the better choice, because it lets the wood underneath be checked and fixed.

Storm damage and your insurance claim

If hail or wind damaged your shingles, you file the claim with your insurance company, and you pay your own deductible. We document the damage with photos, give you a written estimate and work with your adjuster. Be wary of anyone who offers to waive or cover your deductible.

How it works

  1. Book your free inspection. Call 913-398-5020 or request a free estimate online.
  2. Get a clear, honest assessment and estimate. You’ll see photos of your shingles, hear whether you need a repair or a new roof, and get a written estimate. Financing is available through Aqua Finance, Fortifi, Hearth and Home Run Finance.
  3. Your roof gets done and the site gets cleaned up. Many residential projects are finished in a single day.

A lifted shingle is a small fix this month. Left through a winter of wind and ice, it can let water into the decking.

Shingle roofing questions from Overland Park homeowners

What’s the most common shingle for a new roof here?

Architectural shingles. They’re thicker than 3-tab, hold up better in wind and come in a wide range of colors.

Can you replace just a few shingles?

Yes, if the rest of the roof is in good shape. Getting an exact color match on an older roof can be hard, and we’ll show you what to expect before the work.

How do I know if my shingles have hail damage?

Look from the ground for dented gutters and downspout caps, and for granules washed out at the downspouts. The damage on the shingles themselves usually needs a close look on the roof.

Do you install GAF shingles?

Yes. APC Roofing is a GAF Certified contractor.
