That confusion is understandable. Most homeowners only buy gutters once or twice, and from the ground every gutter looks about the same. The differences that matter are in the measurements, and nobody explains those unless you ask.

A good gutter installation starts with a tape measure
Gutters are sized for a roof, not a house. Before anything gets ordered, someone should work out how much roof area drains into each run and how steep that roof is. A steep roof sends water down faster, so it acts like a bigger roof in a hard rain.
That matters a lot in Orlando, where summer storms come down in short, heavy bursts. A gutter doesn’t overflow because the year was wet. It overflows during the ten minutes when a storm stalls right over your street. That’s the moment the system has to be sized for.
With the roof measured, the plan comes down to a few decisions.
Gutter size
Most homes get either 5-inch or 6-inch K-style gutters. The 6-inch gutter carries noticeably more water. On a small, low-slope roof the 5-inch is often plenty. On a large roof, or where two slopes empty into one run, the 6-inch is usually worth it.
Downspout size and count
This is where many installations come up short. A standard 2-by-3-inch downspout drains roughly half the roof area that a 3-by-4-inch downspout can. If a run needs two or three outlets and has one, no amount of cleaning will keep it from overflowing. On runs longer than about 40 feet, a second downspout usually beats a bigger gutter.
Slope and hangers
The gutter should fall about a quarter inch for every ten feet toward its downspout, enough to drain without looking crooked. Hangers should be screwed into solid wood every two to three feet. Aluminum expands and shrinks with the heat, and a long run that’s pinned too tightly can buckle or split at the joints over a few summers.
Gutter replacement often starts with the fascia
When old gutters come down, the board behind them gets its first good look in years. If water has been running behind the gutter, that fascia is often soft, especially with Florida humidity keeping it damp. A new gutter screwed into rotten wood will pull loose, usually in the middle of a storm.
That’s why fascia and gutter installation go together. If the inspection finds soft wood, you’ll see where it is, and the fascia repair is priced as its own line so nothing is buried in one number.
The roof edge matters too. A gutter apron, the strip of flashing that runs from under the roof’s edge into the gutter, keeps water from creeping behind the gutter and staining the fascia. If your roof doesn’t have one, it can usually be added when the new gutters go up.

Sending the water somewhere useful
A new gutter that dumps everything at the corner of the house hasn’t solved much. Orlando’s sandy soil washes out fast under a downspout, and water that pools along the slab can find its way under doors and into stucco cracks.
There are a few ways to move it. A splash block spreads the water but only carries it a foot or two. A downspout extension takes it several feet out and can flip up for mowing. A buried drain line carries it well away from the house and out of sight, with a cleanout so it can be flushed if it clogs. The right choice depends on your yard’s slope and where the water can safely go.

Look past the price per foot. Check the gutter size, how many downspouts each quote includes and what size they are, and whether fascia repair is included or excluded. A quote with more downspouts often drains better.
Should I replace my gutters or repair them?
If the gutters are the right size and the fascia is solid, a repair can make sense. If they overflow even when clean, sag along long stretches or are hung on rotted wood, replacement is usually the better spend.
Do you install gutters on homes that never had them?
