You’re not sure if it’s a quick fix or the start of a bigger problem, and you’d rather not find out the next time it rains. How wind actually damages a roof
Wind doesn’t push evenly across a roof. It pulls hardest at the edges: the eaves, the rakes along the gable ends, the corners and the ridge. That’s why the first shingles to go are usually along the perimeter or at the peak, and why a roof can lose a row near the gutter while the middle looks untouched.
Asphalt shingles are held down by nails and by a strip of sealant that bonds each shingle to the one below it. Strong gusts can break that seal and lift the shingle without tearing it off. When it drops back down, it may look normal from the yard, but there’s often a crease across it where it bent. A creased shingle won’t hold its seal again, and the next storm has an easier time taking it.
Wind also goes after the parts that stick up or stick out:
- Ridge caps, which take wind from both sides
- Metal flashing at walls and chimneys, which can bend or pull loose
- Vent caps and pipe boots that crack or get knocked sideways
- Drip edge and gutters along the eaves
Then there are trees. A falling limb can crack the roof deck even when it only breaks a few shingles on the surface, and that damage needs to be seen from the attic side too.
Signs of wind damage you can check safely
Stay off the roof. A storm-damaged roof can have loose shingles and wet spots that slide underfoot. Most of what you need to know can be seen from the ground or from inside.
From the yard, look for shingles or shingle pieces on the ground, missing tabs that show a darker strip or bare felt, shingles that sit crooked or flap in a breeze, and ridge caps that are cracked or missing. Bent flashing and dented gutters are worth noting too.
From inside, check upstairs ceilings and the tops of outside walls for new stains. If you can get into the attic safely, take a flashlight and look for daylight through the boards, damp insulation, or water marks on the rafters.
What to do right after a storm
Start by taking care of the house and the people in it. If water is coming in, move furniture and electronics out of the way and put down buckets or towels. Stay clear of any downed power lines.
Take photos of what you can see from the ground, along with any damage inside. Note the date of the storm. That record helps later, whether you file an insurance claim or not.
Then get the roof inspected while the damage is fresh. A lifted shingle that lost its seal is a small repair now. Left alone through a few more storms, it can turn into a leak that soaks the attic insulation and the ceiling below.
When storm crews start knocking
After a big storm comes through the Kansas City area, it’s common to see trucks from out of town and people knocking on doors offering a free roof. Some of them do fine work. Some are gone by the time a problem shows up.
You can protect yourself with a few simple checks. Ask for proof of insurance. Ask where the company’s local office is. Get the estimate in writing before you sign anything, and take the time you need instead of deciding the same day. Will the repair match the rest of my roof?
This is one of the most common worries after wind damage, and it’s a fair one. Replacement shingles can come close, but they rarely match perfectly. Your existing shingles have faded in the sun, and some colors and product lines get discontinued over the years.
Before any work starts, we’ll tell you how close a match we can get. If only a few shingles are missing and the match is good, a repair is usually the right call. If the damage is spread across several slopes or the closest available shingle looks noticeably different, you’ll want to weigh that before deciding.
Repair or replacement after wind damage?
A repair usually makes sense when the damage is limited to a few areas and the rest of the roof is in good shape. If wind has lifted shingles across most of the roof, or the roof was already near the end of its life, a roof replacement in Lee’s Summit may be the better use of your money.
