Why gutters overflow
Leaves and clogs get the blame, but a lot of overflowing gutters are simply too small for the roof, or there aren’t enough downspouts.
A roof sends a lot of water into a gutter during a hard storm, especially a large, steep roof that drains into one long run. Standard 5-inch gutters work well on many houses. Larger roofs and steeper pitches often need 6-inch gutters, which carry noticeably more water. Downspouts matter just as much. If a long run has only one downspout, water backs up no matter how clean the gutter is. Adding a downspout or switching to a larger size often fixes overflowing for good.
Before we recommend anything, we measure the roof area that drains into each run, look at the pitch, and figure out how many downspouts the run needs and where they should go.
Gutters and Lee’s Summit weather
Lee’s Summit gets the same hard spring rains as the rest of the Kansas City area, and that’s when undersized gutters show their limits. Winter brings its own problems. Snow and ice add weight that can pull gutters away from the house if the hangers are spaced too far apart or fastened into soft wood. Ice dams can also form along the edge of the roof and push water back under the shingles.
Hail is the third test. Aluminum gutters dent in a bad hailstorm, and those dents are often one of the first signs that the roof took hail too. Seamless gutters, made on site
Seamless aluminum gutters are formed from a roll of metal right at your house, cut to the exact length of each run. With no seams along the straight sections, there are far fewer joints to leak. Aluminum doesn’t rust, and it comes in a range of colors to match your trim.
Hangers are spaced to carry the weight of water, snow and ice, and the gutter is pitched slightly toward each downspout so it drains instead of holding water.
Where the water goes after the downspout
A good gutter system doesn’t stop at the downspout. Water that dumps right next to the foundation can soak the soil, find its way into a basement or crawl space, and wash out mulch and flower beds. Downspout extensions or splash blocks carry water away from the house. We’ll talk through where each downspout should empty so the water ends up somewhere it can drain.
The fascia behind your gutters
Gutters hang on the fascia board along the roof edge. When gutters overflow or leak for years, that board can rot, and new gutters can’t hang securely on soft wood. When we replace gutters, we check the fascia and let you know if any of it needs replacing. We handle fascia and soffit work too, so it can be done at the same time.
New gutters with a new roof
