You’ve decided the old roof has to go. Now the questions start piling up. How long will the crew be at your house? Do you need to be home? What happens if they find rotten wood once the shingles come off? Shingle roof installation in Kansas City is a big project to hand to strangers, and not knowing what’s coming makes it feel bigger.

It helps to know the steps before anyone shows up with a dumpster. Then you can spot a careful job, and you’ll know which questions to ask.
APC Roofing is a GAF Certified roofing contractor, licensed and insured, in business since 2017, with an office in Shawnee serving both sides of the state line. Estimates are free. Call 913-398-5020 to get yours.
Before install day
Your estimate should spell out which shingle you’re getting, what’s being torn off, and how any damaged decking will be handled and priced. If it doesn’t, ask. Most of the surprises people tell stories about come from estimates that left those parts vague.
Many cities around the metro, on both the Missouri and Kansas sides, require a permit for a re-roof. Ask whether the permit is included and who pulls it.
A few days ahead, a little prep makes the day easier on you:
- Move cars out of the driveway and garage, and clear patio furniture and grills away from the walls.
- Take pictures and mirrors down from walls on the top floor. Hammering can shake them loose.
- Cover anything stored in the attic. Some dust will come through the boards.
- Plan for pets and kids to be away from the work area. It’s loud, and debris falls.
How a shingle roof installation in Kansas City goes
Tear-off
The crew strips the old shingles, underlayment and worn flashing down to the wooden deck. This is the noisiest part of the day.
Deck check and repairs
With the roof bare, the deck is exposed for the first time in years. Soft, rotted or delaminated boards get cut out and replaced so every nail has solid wood to grab. Older homes sometimes have gapped plank decking, and new sheathing may go over it before any shingles do. This is the one part nobody can fully price until the old roof is off, which is why your estimate should explain how it’s handled.
Ice barrier, underlayment and edge metal
A self-sealing ice and water barrier goes along the eaves and into the valleys, where Kansas City ice dams and heavy runoff do their damage. Underlayment covers the rest of the deck. Metal drip edge along the eaves and rakes keeps water from curling back under the shingles and into the wood.
Starter strips and shingles
Starter strips line the bottom edge and rakes so the first row seals down tight. Then the shingles go on, row by row, each one nailed in the manufacturer’s nailing zone. Placement matters more than people realize. A nail set too high can let the shingle lift in a strong wind years from now.
Flashing, ridge and cleanup
Walls, chimneys and pipe boots get new flashing so the joints that leak most are protected. Ridge cap shingles finish the peak and hips. Then the crew clears the yard, the gutters and the driveway before leaving.
Many residential projects are finished in a single day. Larger, steeper or more cut-up roofs can take longer, and you’ll know what to expect before work starts.
Kansas City seasons and install timing
Shingles can be installed most of the year here, with a few things to keep in mind. Each shingle has a strip of sealant that bonds it to the row below, and it needs warmth from the sun to activate. On a roof installed in cold weather, that bond can take weeks to form, so manufacturers call for extra hand-sealing in some conditions. Spring is busy because of hail season, and rain days push schedules around. If your roof is leaking now, don’t wait for perfect weather to have it looked at.
Choosing the shingle
Most installations today use architectural shingles, which are thicker and more wind-resistant than the older 3-tab style. If hail worries you, impact-resistant shingles are worth a conversation. Our page on asphalt shingle roofing in Kansas City compares the grades side by side.
Questions worth asking any roofer
- Is a full tear-off included, or are you going over the old roof?
- How is damaged decking handled and priced?
- Where does ice and water barrier go on my roof?
- Will you replace the flashing and pipe boots, or reuse them?
- Who do I call if I have a question during or after the job?
You should get clear answers to every one of these, from us or anyone else.

Shingle installation questions
Do I need to be home during the installation?
Not usually, but someone should be reachable by phone, especially if the crew finds damaged decking that needs your OK.
What happens if it rains on install day?
Shingles shouldn’t go on in the rain, so installs are planned around the forecast, and a wet day can move your date.
Do you install shingle roofs in Overland Park and the Kansas side?
Yes. We work across the Kansas City metro on both sides of the state line.
Will the new roof match my neighbors’?
It doesn’t have to. You’ll pick the color from real samples, ideally looked at outside in daylight next to your brick or siding.
Your new roof, done right
Waiting on a roof that’s already failing tends to cost more in the end. Water that gets past worn shingles works into the deck and insulation first, and that wood has to be replaced on install day.
At the end of a good install, you’ve got a dry house and a roof you don’t think about every time the sky turns green. Call 913-398-5020 to book your free inspection, or start your estimate online.
