Flashing around chimneys and walls
Metal flashing seals the joints where the roof meets something vertical. Over time, sealant dries and cracks, and flashing that relied on caulk instead of proper step and counterflashing starts letting water in. Chimneys are one of the most common leak sources on Kansas City homes.
Pipe boots and vents
The rubber collar around a plumbing vent pipe cracks after years of sun and cold. When it does, water runs down the pipe and shows up as a stain near a bathroom or hallway ceiling.

Water can travel along a rafter or the underside of the roof deck for several feet before it drips. That’s why patching the shingles right above the stain often doesn’t work.
A proper inspection starts in the attic, where stains on the wood show the water’s path. Then it moves to the roof to check the flashing, boots, valleys and shingles uphill from that path.
