Your shingles are starting to look tired. There are dark streaks, a few curled edges, granules piling up at the bottom of the downspouts, and after the last hailstorm a neighbor’s roof got replaced. You’re wondering if yours is next, and what kind of shingle roofing in Independence, MO actually holds up to the weather here.

Those are the right questions to ask before anyone climbs a ladder. Shingles all look similar from the street, but the product and how it’s installed make a real difference in how long your roof lasts.
APC Roofing is a GAF Certified contractor, licensed and insured, and in business since 2017. Your inspection is free. Call 913-398-5020 and we’ll tell you what shape your roof is in and what your options are.
Architectural or 3-tab: which shingle fits your home
Most asphalt shingle roofing in Independence falls into two types.
3-tab shingles are a single flat layer with cutouts that make them look like three separate tabs. They’re thinner and lighter, and you’ll still see them on older roofs and some garages and sheds.
Architectural shingles, also called dimensional or laminated shingles, are made of two or more layers bonded together. They’re heavier, look more like wood shake or slate, and generally handle wind better. They’re what most homeowners choose today. You can read more on our architectural shingle roofing page.
Premium shingle lines go a step further in thickness and appearance. If you’re curious, ask us to bring samples.
Impact-resistant shingles
Some shingles are tested and rated for hail impact. In a hail-prone area like Kansas City, they’re worth asking about when you replace your roof. No shingle is hail-proof, but a rated shingle is designed to take a hit with less damage.
What Independence weather does to shingles
Hail. Hail knocks granules loose and bruises the mat underneath. Granules are what protect the asphalt from the sun, so once they’re gone, that spot ages fast. Damage is easy to miss from the ground.
Wind. New shingles bond to the row below with a heat-activated seal strip. Strong spring winds can break that seal, and once a shingle is unsealed, it lifts, creases and eventually tears off.
Freeze-thaw and ice dams. Winter melt refreezes at the eaves and pushes water up under the bottom rows of shingles. In a climate like ours, an ice barrier membrane along the eaves is standard practice on a new roof.
Summer heat. Hot, humid summers dry out and age asphalt over time, especially on the south- and west-facing slopes.
What a quality shingle installation includes
You’ll never see most of what makes a shingle roof last. A few things worth asking any roofer about:
- Deck condition. Soft or rotted decking should be replaced before new shingles go down.
- Underlayment and ice barrier. A water-resistant layer over the whole deck, plus ice barrier at the eaves and in the valleys.
- Drip edge and starter shingles. Metal edge trim and a proper starter row at the eaves and rakes help keep wind from getting under the first course.
- Nailing. Nails need to go in the manufacturer’s nailing zone, at the right depth. High or crooked nails are one of the most common reasons shingles blow off.
- Flashing. New flashing at walls, chimneys and valleys, and new pipe boots, rather than reusing tired old ones.
For the step-by-step process, see our shingle roof installation in Independence page.
Repair or replace your shingle roof?
A few missing or damaged shingles, a cracked pipe boot or a small flashing leak can usually be repaired. Replacement starts to make sense when the shingles are curling and losing granules across most of the roof, when hail damage is spread across several slopes, or when you’re chasing more than one leak. Putting new shingles over old ones can hide soft decking and other problems, which is why a tear-off is often the better choice.
We’ll show you photos and our reasoning. If a repair will do, that’s what we’ll tell you.
Choosing a shingle color
Color is the fun part, and it’s worth a little thought. Lighter colors reflect more sun, while darker colors can help snow melt off a bit sooner in winter. Most homeowners choose based on the brick, siding and trim. We’ll bring samples, and it helps to look at them outside, in daylight, against your house.

Shingle roofing questions from Independence homeowners
How do I know if my shingles need replacing?
Look for curled or cracked shingles, bald spots where granules are gone, granules in the gutters and repeated leaks. A free inspection gives you a clear answer.
Are architectural shingles worth it over 3-tab?
For most homes, yes. They’re thicker, generally handle wind better and look more dimensional.
Can new shingles go over my old roof?
Sometimes, if there’s only one existing layer and code allows it. A tear-off is often better because it lets the deck be inspected and repaired.
How long does a shingle roof replacement take?
Many residential shingle roofs are done in one day. Larger or steeper roofs take longer, and we’ll give you a timeline with your estimate.
