Why a flat roof needs a different kind of roofing
Shingles work by overlapping, so water runs off one onto the next. That only works when the roof is steep enough. Below a certain pitch, water moves slowly or sits, wind pushes it sideways, and it finds its way under the laps. So low-slope roofs get a continuous waterproof sheet, called a membrane, with sealed seams instead of overlaps.

When a flat roof is near the end of its life, there are two main routes. A tear-off removes the old roof down to the deck, so wet insulation and rotted decking get found and replaced. A recover adds a new membrane over the existing roof, which can work when there’s only one existing layer and the insulation underneath is dry.
