Look at a standing seam roof and you’ll see long, flat metal panels running from the ridge to the eave, separated by raised ribs. Those ribs are the seams. Where two panels meet, their edges are folded or snapped together and stand up above the flat part of the roof, well above where water flows.
The panels are held down by clips hidden under the seams. No screws go through the flat of the panel, so there are no exposed fasteners to work loose or rubber washers to dry out in the sun.
That’s the big difference from the screw-down panels you see on barns and sheds. On those corrugated metal roofs, every screw head is a small hole that depends on a washer to stay sealed. They have their place, especially on outbuildings, but on a home most people want the cleaner look and fewer leak points of standing seam.

Panel thickness is measured in gauge, and a lower number means thicker metal. Homes commonly use 24 or 26 gauge. Thicker panels resist dents and look flatter.
You’ll also choose a rib style, panel width and color. Narrower panels and panels with light ribbing rolled into the flat area help hide oil canning, the slight waviness you can sometimes see on flat metal in low evening light. It’s cosmetic and doesn’t affect how the roof sheds water, but it’s worth knowing about before you pick a panel.
What goes under the metal matters
A standing seam roof on a house goes over solid roof decking with a high-temperature underlayment between the deck and the panels. Ordinary felt can break down under a sun-heated metal roof, so the underlayment choice matters in Florida.
During a replacement, any soft or rotted decking gets replaced before the new roof goes on. Clips need solid wood to hold. We tear the old roof off down to the deck before any metal goes on, so we can see and fix the wood first.
Low-slope porch roofs and additions need a check too. Some standing seam profiles are rated for shallower slopes than others, and anything below a panel’s limit needs a different roofing system.
