There’s a brown spot spreading on the ceiling, or a storm just blew a few shingles into the yard, and you need roof repair in Springfield, MO before the next round of rain. You’re probably wondering how bad it is, whether a repair will hold and whether someone is going to try to sell you a whole new roof you don’t need.

That’s a reasonable thing to worry about. A good roofer should find where the water is actually getting in, fix that and tell you honestly how much life your roof has left.
APC Roofing is a GAF Certified roofing contractor, licensed and insured. Inspections and estimates are free. Call 913-398-5020, tell us what you’re seeing inside and we’ll set up a visit.
Where roof leaks usually start
The stain on your ceiling is rarely right under the problem. Water can run along a rafter or across the top of the drywall for several feet before it drips. Finding the real entry point means checking upslope of the stain, both from the roof and from the attic.
Most leaks start at the places where the roof is interrupted:
- Pipe boots. The rubber collar around a plumbing vent dries out and cracks long before the shingles around it wear out. It’s one of the most common leaks we find, and one of the simplest to fix.
- Flashing. Where the roof meets a wall, a chimney or a skylight, metal flashing directs water away. When it rusts, loosens or was patched with caulk instead of installed right, water gets behind it.
- Valleys. The channel where two slopes meet carries a lot of water. Worn or poorly cut valleys leak in heavy rain.
- Lifted or missing shingles. Wind breaks the seal strip under a shingle, and then it flaps, creases and eventually tears off.
- Nails that back out. Heat and cold push nails up over time. A raised nail head can punch a small hole in the shingle above it.
If your leak only shows up in wind-driven rain, that usually points to flashing or the ridge, not the open field of shingles.
What Springfield weather does to a roof
Southwest Missouri is hard on roofs in more than one season. Spring thunderstorms bring strong winds and hail, and hail can bruise shingles in ways you can’t see from the ground. Dented gutters and vents are often the first sign it hit your roof.
Winters bring freeze-thaw cycles, where water seeps into small gaps, freezes and widens them. Snow that melts on a warm roof and refreezes at the cold edge can build ice dams, which push water back up under the shingles. A lot of winter leaks near the eaves come from this, and the long-term fix is usually better attic insulation and ventilation, not just new shingles.
Summer heat and humidity work on the roof from both sides. A poorly vented attic traps hot, damp air that ages the decking and shingles from underneath.
Repair or replace?
This is the question most people really want answered. If the problem is in one spot and the rest of the roof is in decent shape, a repair is usually the right call. Replacing a pipe boot, resealing flashing or swapping out a section of storm-damaged shingles can buy you years.
A repair stops making sense when the shingles are brittle across whole slopes, granules are piling up in the gutters, the deck feels soft or new leaks keep appearing after each fix. At that point you’re paying to patch a roof that’s worn out. If that’s where your roof is, we’ll show you with photos, and our roof replacement team in Springfield can walk you through what a new roof involves.
One more thing to know. If your shingles are a discontinued style or color, a repair may not match perfectly. You’ll hear about that before any work starts.
If a storm caused the damage
Hail and wind damage are often covered by homeowners insurance, while normal wear usually isn’t. If you think a storm damaged your roof, we’ll inspect it, document the damage with photos and give you a written estimate you can share with your insurance company. You file your own claim and you pay your own deductible. Be cautious with any roofer who promises to pay your deductible. Our hail damage roof repair in Springfield page has more on that process.
If water is coming in right now, protect what’s under it and keep people out from under any sagging ceiling. Don’t climb onto a wet roof. A tarp can buy time, but it’s a stopgap, not a repair.

Questions about roof repair in Springfield, MO
How do I know if my roof can be repaired instead of replaced?
If the damage is limited to one area and the shingles elsewhere are still flexible and holding their granules, a repair usually makes sense. Widespread brittleness, soft decking or repeated leaks point toward replacement.
Why does my roof leak only when it rains hard?
Heavy, wind-driven rain pushes water sideways into gaps that light rain never reaches. That usually means flashing at a wall or chimney, a worn pipe boot or the ridge.
Can you fix a leak in the winter?
Often, yes. Shingles are harder to seal in cold weather, so some repairs get a temporary fix first and a permanent one when it warms up. We’ll tell you which applies.
Do you repair hail damage on asphalt shingle roofs?
Yes. Hail-damaged asphalt shingles are among the most common repairs in southwest Missouri. If the damage covers most of the roof, replacement may make more sense, and you’ll see the evidence either way.
Get back to a dry, quiet house
A small leak rarely stays small. Water that gets past the shingles soaks the decking and insulation, and a repair that would have taken an hour becomes a bigger job.
Once the real problem is fixed, the next storm is just weather. The ceiling stays clean, the house stays dry and you know what shape your roof is really in.
