Most metal roofs you see on barns and sheds use exposed fasteners: screws driven straight through the face of the panel. Each screw has a rubber washer, and over the years those washers dry out and the screws loosen as the metal moves. That’s a lot of small openings to maintain.
Standing seam panels are different. Each panel has raised edges, the “seams,” that lock or snap into the next panel and stand up above the flat part of the roof. The panels are held down with clips hidden under those seams, so there are no screws through the surface where water runs.
