What you really want to know is whether TPO roofing in Kansas City, MO is right for your building, or just the thing a contractor happens to sell.

What TPO is
TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply roofing membrane, usually white, that comes in large rolls. Its seams are joined with hot air: a welder melts the edges of two sheets together into one piece. Done right, a welded seam is as strong as the sheet itself, and it can be checked along its whole length with a probe before the crew leaves.
That welded seam is TPO’s biggest edge over rubber roofs that rely on tape or adhesive.
Where TPO fits
TPO is a go-to membrane on low-slope commercial roofs: offices, retail, warehouses, churches and apartment buildings. On houses, it goes on flat additions, porches, garages and low-slope sections where shingles won’t work.
It’s a strong match when people live or work right under the roof and summer heat is a concern, or when the roof carries HVAC units and needs tough, well-sealed details around the curbs.
How TPO roofing in Kansas City, MO handles the weather
Summer heat. A white TPO roof reflects much of the sun’s heat. The roof surface stays cooler, the rooms under it stay cooler, and the membrane ages more slowly than a dark one would. Through a hot, humid Kansas City summer, that’s the main reason people pick it.
Winter cold. TPO gets stiffer in the cold than rubber does. On a well-installed roof that isn’t a problem, but it raises the bar on workmanship. Welding in cold weather takes adjustments, and a sheet installed without room to move can stress corners and edges. Winter repairs need the same care.
Hail. A TPO membrane laid over soft insulation can be punctured or cracked by large hail. A cover board under the membrane and a thicker sheet both improve hail resistance. After a big storm, look for small cracks and punctures, which are easy to miss from the ground.

Thickness and what’s underneath
TPO comes in several thicknesses, measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). Thicker membrane resists punctures and weathering better. The thickness should be written into your proposal, since nobody can tell by looking.
Under the membrane, rigid insulation keeps the building comfortable, and tapered insulation can add slope so water drains instead of sitting. A roof that ponds will wear out early no matter what membrane is on it, so fixing drainage belongs in any good TPO job. TPO, EPDM or PVC?

PVC is another heat-welded white membrane. It resists grease and chemicals better, which is why it often shows up around restaurant exhaust fans.
TPO lands in the middle for many buildings, with welded seams, a reflective surface and a wide range of uses.
Common TPO repairs
Even good TPO roofs need attention over the years. The usual issues are seams with a thin or incomplete weld, punctures from foot traffic or dropped tools, flashing at curbs and walls that has pulled loose, and dried-out sealant at pipe penetrations.
