The wind howled most of the night. This morning there are a few shingles in the flower bed, a strip of black edging hanging off the gutter and a branch across the driveway. The roof looks mostly fine from the ground, so you’re wondering whether you need wind damage roof repair in Independence at all, or whether a couple of missing shingles can wait.

How wind damages a roof
Wind doesn’t push on a roof evenly. As it flows over the house, it creates lift, a bit like air over an airplane wing, and that pull is strongest at the edges: the eaves, the rakes, the corners and the ridge. That’s why damage usually starts there and works inward.
Every shingle is held down two ways. Nails go through it into the deck, and a strip of sealant bonds it to the shingle below once the sun warms it. When a strong gust gets under an edge, it can break that seal. Once a shingle is unsealed, every storm after that flaps it a little more until it tears loose or the nails pull through.
Independence gets more than its share of this. Spring and early-summer thunderstorms bring straight-line winds that can be as rough on a roof as anything else Missouri weather throws at it, and older roofs whose sealant has dried out lose shingles first.
Signs of wind damage on your roof
Some of these you can spot from the ground with binoculars. Others take a closer look.
- Missing shingles. The obvious one. You’ll see a patch of darker underlayment or bare deck where shingles used to be.
- Creased shingles. A shingle that was folded back by the wind and then dropped down again keeps a straight crease line across it. The seal is broken, the mat is weakened, and it won’t lie flat or reseal on its own.
- Lifted or loose tabs. Edges that sit up off the row below, especially near the rakes and the ridge.
- Missing or cracked ridge caps. The caps along the peak take the strongest wind on the roof.
- Bent drip edge or flashing. Metal along the edges and around chimneys can be pried up or bent back.
- Damaged gutters. Gutters pulled away from the fascia, or a section on the ground.
- Limb damage. Even a branch that bounced off can crack shingles or punch through the deck.
- Signs inside. A new ceiling stain or damp insulation after a windy rain means water found a way in.
What to do after a windstorm
Stay off the roof. Wet shingles are slick, and loose shingles slide. Walk around the house and take photos of anything you see on the ground, on the gutters and on the siding. Date-stamped photos help if you file an insurance claim later.

Wind damage roof repair in Independence: fix it or replace it?
A small area of missing or creased shingles on a roof that’s otherwise in good shape is a repair. The damaged shingles come out, new ones go in and are nailed and sealed, and loose flashing gets refastened or replaced.
Two things can complicate that. On an older roof, the shingles around the damage can be brittle enough to crack when they’re lifted to slide new ones in. A lifted shingle can sometimes be hand-sealed if it isn’t creased or torn. A creased shingle should be replaced, because the fold weakens it and it won’t stay down.
