What hail does to an asphalt shingle
When a hailstone hits a shingle, it knocks the granules off in a small round spot and can crack the fiberglass mat underneath. That spot is called a bruise. It may feel soft when pressed, and it often looks darker than the shingle around it because the asphalt is showing through.
A bruise usually doesn’t leak the week of the storm. Over the next seasons, the sun dries out the bare asphalt, the crack in the mat spreads, and water finds its way to the deck. That delay is why so many hail claims start with a ceiling stain a year later.
Hail damage looks random. Hits land scattered across a slope, more on the side facing the storm. Normal wear looks different: blistering, even granule loss across the whole roof, or curling along the edges. Telling the two apart is a big part of what a good inspection does.
What hail does to metal, gutters and vents
Soft metal shows hail clearly. Gutters, downspouts, roof vents, chimney caps and flashing all dent, and those dents are often the first sign you’ll notice. Metal roofs can dent too. Some dents are only cosmetic and some loosen seams or crack the paint finish, so they need a closer look.

A few hits on one slope, or a damaged vent or boot, can be repaired. Repairs on a hail-hit roof have limits, though. Older shingles get brittle and crack when they’re lifted, and the style on your house may be discontinued, so a patch can stand out. If hail bruised every slope, replacing the roof is usually the better fix.
