It’s a fair question, and the answer isn’t always “replace it.” Some 3-tab roofs have plenty of life left and just need a repair. Others have reached the point where every storm costs you another patch. You should know which one you have before you spend anything.

What makes a 3-tab shingle different
A 3-tab shingle is a single flat layer of asphalt-coated mat with mineral granules on top. Each strip is cut into three tabs, which gives the roof its neat, brick-like pattern. Architectural shingles, by comparison, are two or more layers laminated together, so they’re thicker, heavier and have a shadowed, dimensional look.
That single layer is the main difference that matters on the coast. A 3-tab shingle is lighter and more flexible, and it generally carries a lower wind rating than an architectural shingle. When wind gets under a tab, it can fold the tab back and leave a crease that never fully lies flat again.
How 3-tab shingle roofing holds up in Daytona Beach weather
The Florida sun is the slow problem. Year after year, UV dries out the asphalt and the granules loosen and wash into the gutters. Once enough granules are gone, the mat underneath is exposed and starts to crack.
Wind is the fast problem. Each 3-tab shingle has a strip of sealant that bonds it to the row below, and the sun’s heat activates it after installation. As the roof ages, those bonds can let go. Then a strong afternoon thunderstorm or a tropical storm passing offshore can lift tabs, crease them or tear them off.
Signs your 3-tab roof is wearing out:
- Granules piling up at the downspouts
- Tabs that are curled, cupped or creased
- Bare or shiny patches where the granules are gone
- Missing tabs after a windy storm
- Dark streaks, which are usually algae and mostly cosmetic
Repairing a 3-tab roof
A 3-tab roof in decent shape can usually be repaired. Replacing a few blown-off tabs, resealing lifted ones or fixing the flashing at a leak are all normal repairs.
Two things make 3-tab repairs harder than they look. Older shingles get brittle, and lifting them to slip new ones in can crack the shingles around the repair. Matching is the other one. Fewer 3-tab colors are made than there used to be, and sun-faded shingles rarely match new ones exactly. We’ll show you the closest match before any work starts. When it’s time to replace
If the shingles crack when they’re lifted, granule loss is showing across the whole roof, or you’re patching after every storm, repairs stop being a good use of money. Many Florida insurers also look closely at roof age and condition at renewal, and an older 3-tab roof can come up in that conversation.
When you replace, you can go back to 3-tab where it’s available or move up to architectural shingles. Most homeowners in the Daytona area choose architectural for the wind performance and the look. 3-tab can still make sense on a detached garage or shed where budget matters more than appearance.
A replacement should start with a full tear-off so the deck can be checked for soft or rotted wood. New underlayment, starter strips and flashing go on before the shingles.

For most homes near the coast, yes. Architectural shingles are thicker and generally rated for higher winds. They cost more, so we’ll show you both prices and let you decide.
Can you mix 3-tab and architectural on one roof?
It’s possible on separate roof sections, but it usually looks patched. Most people replace the whole roof in one shingle type.
Why are my 3-tab shingles losing granules?
Some granule loss is normal on a new roof. On an older roof, steady loss means the sun has worn down the asphalt, and the shingles are nearing the end of their life.
