What a 3-tab shingle is
A 3-tab shingle is a single flat layer of asphalt-coated mat with two cutouts along the bottom edge, which makes each strip look like three separate tabs. On the roof, that gives the neat, brick-like pattern you see on a lot of older homes.
An architectural (or dimensional) shingle has two or more layers laminated together, with an uneven top layer that gives the roof a textured, shadowed look. Architectural shingles carry more asphalt, are heavier and generally have higher wind ratings than 3-tab.
How 3-tab shingles hold up in Denver
Denver is tough on any shingle, and a single-layer 3-tab has less material to give.
Hail. The Front Range gets frequent hail. A hailstone knocks granules off the surface and can crack the mat underneath. A thinner 3-tab shingle has less cushion against that impact than a thicker laminated shingle, and the impact-resistant shingles built for hail country are generally architectural designs.
Wind. Strong winds coming off the mountains can lift shingle tabs. Once a tab’s seal strip lets go, it flaps in every gust, and a tab folded back far enough creases and never lies flat again. Single-layer 3-tab tabs are lighter, which makes them easier for wind to catch.
Sun and cold. High-altitude UV dries out asphalt faster, and freeze-thaw works on any small crack. As 3-tab shingles age, they turn brittle, and brittle tabs crack when lifted for a repair.
None of this means your 3-tab roof is failing. It means it’s worth an honest look after storms and as it gets older.
Can you still match 3-tab shingles?
This is where many homeowners get stuck. A lot of manufacturers have cut back their 3-tab lines, and some colors are no longer made. A repair on an older 3-tab roof may use the closest available match, and new shingles often look different from weathered ones at first, even in the same color.
For a small repair on a back slope, that’s usually fine. For a repair on the front of the house, you’ll want to see the match before it goes on. Sometimes the color difference is what tips a homeowner toward replacing a whole slope or the whole roof.
Repair or replace your 3-tab roof?
