Denver weather damages shingles in a few predictable ways, and each one calls for a slightly different fix.
Hail bruises. Hailstones knock the granules off and can crack the mat inside the shingle, even when the surface looks only scuffed. Run your hand over a bruise and it can feel soft, like a bruise on an apple. Those spots lose their protection from the sun and age faster, and a crack in the mat can let water in.
Wind-lifted and torn tabs. Strong gusts can lift a shingle, break the adhesive strip that holds it flat, and crease it along the top. A creased shingle may still be sitting in place, but it’s no longer sealed and the next gust can tear it off.
Cracked pipe boots. The rubber collar around each plumbing vent pipe takes a beating from high-altitude sun. It cracks and lets water run down the pipe into the attic, and it often goes long before the shingles around it.

What a shingle repair actually involves
Replacing a damaged shingle is careful work, because the shingles around it are holding each other down. The roofer breaks the adhesive seal on the rows above, pulls the nails, slides out the damaged piece, nails in a new one and reseals everything so the tabs stay flat in the wind.
In winter, older shingles get stiff and brittle, and lifting them to reach the nails can crack the good ones next to the repair. That’s one reason a cold-weather repair takes more time, and sometimes a temporary fix makes sense until a warmer day.
The repair also has to reach the real source of the leak. Water can travel along the roof deck or a rafter before it drips, so the stain on your ceiling may be several feet from the opening. A roofer who checks the attic as well as the roof surface is much more likely to fix it the first time.
Will new shingles match my roof?
This is one of the most common questions, and the honest answer is: not perfectly. New shingles haven’t faded in the sun the way yours have, and if your shingle line or color has been discontinued, the closest match may look a little different.
