The hail lasted maybe ten minutes. When it stopped, the yard was white, the car had a few new dings and the gutters looked like someone had gone at them with a hammer. Now you’re wondering what it did to the roof you can’t see. If you need hail damage roof repair in Blue Springs, the first job is finding out what’s actually up there.

It’s an uneasy feeling. Hail damage usually doesn’t leak right away, so the roof can look fine while the shingles are already worn down. And after a big hail day, it’s hard to know which knock on the door to trust.
APC Roofing is GAF Certified, licensed and insured, and has been in business since 2017. We work across the Kansas City area, including Blue Springs, and your hail damage inspection is free. Call 913-398-5020 to set one up.
What hail does to a shingle roof
An asphalt shingle has three working parts: a fiberglass mat in the middle, asphalt that keeps water out and a layer of granules on top that shields the asphalt from the sun.
When a hailstone hits, it can knock those granules off and leave a dark spot. A harder hit bruises the shingle, crushing the mat underneath so the spot feels soft when pressed. Large hail can crack the shingle or punch through it.
The trouble is timing. A bruised shingle doesn’t usually leak the next day. With the granules gone, sun and heat dry out the exposed asphalt, and the spot cracks over the following months. By the time water gets in, the storm is long forgotten.
Hail and Blue Springs roofs
Hail season around Kansas City runs mostly through spring and early summer, when strong thunderstorms build across the plains. Stones around an inch across, about the size of a quarter, are often enough to damage asphalt shingles. Bigger hail can damage almost any roof.
Age matters, too. Older shingles that have already lost some of their flexibility crack more easily than newer ones. Two houses on the same street can come through the same storm in very different shape. Wind often arrives with the hail, and our storm damage in Blue Springs page covers the other kinds of damage a storm can leave.
Signs of hail damage you can check from the ground
Stay off the roof, but walk the property and look for:
- Dents or dings in gutters, downspouts and metal vent caps
- Granules collecting at the bottom of downspouts or in splash blocks
- Dented or torn window screens and siding
- Dings in the fins of your outdoor AC unit
- Damage to cars, mailboxes or patio furniture that were outside during the storm
If you see dents on soft metals around the house, there’s a good chance the roof was hit too. Take photos and note the date.
What a hail damage inspection looks for
On the roof, a thorough hail inspection checks:
- Each slope separately, since hail often hits one side harder than another
- Granule loss and bruising on the shingles, with hits marked and photographed
- Damage to ridge caps, which take hail at an angle
- Dented metal vents, flashing and pipe boot collars
- The attic, for any sign water has already come in
You’ll get photos of what we find, organized by slope, and a written estimate. If the hail didn’t damage your roof, you’ll hear that too.
Repair or replacement after hail
A repair makes sense when hail damage is limited to a small area and the rest of the roof is sound. That might be a few bruised shingles on one slope or a dented vent.
Replacement makes more sense when hits are spread across several slopes. Patching shingle after shingle on a roof like that rarely holds up, and the new pieces won’t match the weathered ones. If your shingles are older and brittle, a repair can crack the shingles next to it.
If you’re replacing your roof after hail, ask about impact-resistant shingles. They’re made to flex under a hailstone instead of cracking. They’re not hail-proof, and they cost more, but some homeowners in hail country find them worth it. Some insurers offer a discount for them, so ask your agent. You can compare options on our architectural shingle roofing page.
Hail damage and your insurance claim
Many hail repairs and replacements go through homeowner’s insurance. Here’s how it works with us. You file the claim with your insurance company and pay your deductible. We document the hail damage with photos and measurements, give you a written estimate and work with your adjuster so the damage on your roof is clearly accounted for.
Be wary of anyone who offers to waive or cover your deductible. For more on the steps, see our insurance roof claims in Blue Springs page.
Check your policy for a time limit on reporting storm damage. Since hail damage often doesn’t leak right away, it’s easy to let that window slip by.

Hail damage questions from Blue Springs homeowners
How do I know if hail damaged my roof if it isn’t leaking?
Look for dents on gutters, vents and your AC unit, and granules in the downspouts. Then have the roof inspected. Hail damage often doesn’t leak for months.
Can hail damage be repaired, or does the roof need replacing?
That comes down to how widespread the damage is. A few hits on one slope can usually be repaired. Damage across most of the roof usually calls for replacement.
What size hail damages a roof?
Hail around an inch across can damage asphalt shingles, especially older ones. Smaller hail can still knock granules loose.
Should I file an insurance claim for hail damage?
That’s your decision. Get an inspection first so you know whether there’s real damage, then talk to your insurance company.
