Kansas City doesn’t get one kind of hard weather. It gets several, and your gutters feel all of them.
Spring and early summer storms drop a lot of rain in a short burst. Gutters don’t fail on a rainy week. They fail in the ten minutes when a storm parks over your house and the whole roof sheds water at once. A run that’s too narrow, or one with a single downspout at the end of a long stretch, overflows right then.
Hail comes with many of those storms. It dents gutters and downspouts, and a dent in the bottom of a trough can hold water and debris from then on.
Winter is the slow test. Snow and ice sit in the gutters for days, adding weight that pulls hangers loose and bends the front lip. Freeze-thaw cycles open up seams and corners a little more each year.
Then there are the trees. Oaks, maples and cottonwoods across the metro drop leaves, seeds and fluff from spring through late fall, and the small stuff packs into downspouts faster than most people expect.
Signs your gutters aren’t keeping up
You can spot most gutter trouble from the yard:
- Water spilling over the front edge during a heavy rain
- Drips or stains behind the gutter, on the fascia or siding
- A run that sags, pulls away from the house or holds standing water
- Downspouts that empty right against the foundation
- Peeling paint, soft wood or stains on the fascia boards
- Dents, split seams or loose end caps after a storm
Any one of these is worth a look. Two or three together usually means the system needs more than a cleaning.

Your gutters and your roof work as one system
Gutters catch what the roof sheds, so the two have to fit together. The metal at the roof edge needs to send water into the trough, not behind it. The fascia board the gutters hang on needs to be solid. If it’s rotted, new gutters won’t stay put for long.

And if you’re planning a roof replacement, it’s usually the right moment to deal with the gutters, since the edge of the roof is already open and everything can be fitted together.

Gutter questions from Kansas City homeowners
Do I need bigger gutters?
Maybe. A large roof, a steep pitch or a long run feeding one downspout can overwhelm standard 5-inch gutters. Often the less costly fix is more downspouts or larger ones. We’ll measure before recommending either.
Will new gutters stop ice dams?
No. Ice dams start with heat escaping from the house and melting snow higher on the roof. Good gutters help carry the melt away, but the fix for ice dams is in the attic, not at the eave.
Should I replace my gutters when I replace my roof?
It’s often a good time to. If your gutters are older, dented or undersized, doing them along with the roof means the edge metal and gutters get fitted together.
Where should my downspouts drain?
Away from the house. Water dumped at the foundation is one of the most common causes of wet basements. Extensions or splash blocks that carry water several feet out make a real difference.
