How wind damages a roof
Wind doesn’t push evenly across a roof. It speeds up over the edges, corners and ridge, and that creates suction that tries to peel shingles up from those spots first. That’s why wind damage usually starts at the eaves, the rakes and the peak, not in the middle of a slope.
Shingles are held down by nails and by a sealant strip that bonds each row to the one below. A hard gust can break that seal without tearing the shingle off. The shingle flaps, gets a crease across it and loses its grip. It may still be on the roof today and gone after the next storm.
Wind also does damage you won’t find on the shingles:
- Flashing bent or pulled loose at walls and chimneys
- Ridge caps lifted or missing
- Branches and debris dropped onto the roof, cracking shingles or puncturing the deck
- Metal panels or trim loosened along their edges
- Flat-roof membranes lifted or torn at the perimeter
Kansas City wind: straight-line storms and tornadoes
Most wind damage around Kansas City comes from strong thunderstorms in spring and summer, with straight-line winds that can be as damaging as a small tornado over a wide area. Tornadoes are less common but do far more harm along their path.
After a tornado or very severe storm
If a tornado or violent storm hit near your home, start with safety. Stay off the roof. Watch for downed power lines and call the utility if you see one. If there’s major structural damage, such as a tree through the roof or a section of roof missing, keep people out of those rooms until it’s been checked.
Then document everything. Take photos of the roof from the ground, the yard, the siding and any damage inside. Move belongings away from drips and set out buckets. Keep receipts for anything you spend to protect the house, since your insurance company may ask for them.

Signs of wind damage you can check from the ground
- Shingles or shingle pieces in the yard, gutters or on the driveway
- Missing shingles, showing dark underlayment or bare wood
- Lifted or uneven rows along the eaves and rakes

- Bent flashing or loose metal trim
- New water stains on ceilings or walls, or damp spots in the attic
Some damage, especially creased shingles and broken seals, only shows up when someone gets on the roof. That’s what a storm inspection is for.
Why wind damage gets worse in a Kansas City winter
A lifted or creased shingle that seems minor in July becomes a real problem by January. Rain gets under it, freezes and pushes it up further. Snow melts and refreezes at the edges, and an ice dam can force water under the loosened rows.
